Inmate suffocated; state investigation continues
/The inmate who died Sept. 25 at the Catawba County jail suffocated
after a fractured rib punctured one of his lungs and filled it with
blood, authorities said Tuesday. But N.C. State Bureau of Investigation
agents, who are looking into 29-year-old Ricardo Garza's death,
wouldn't say how the rib was broken or whether either of the two
officers who restrained Garza would be charged with a crime. Garza, a
Hickory resident in jail after a Sept. 20 arrest for driving while
impaired and without a driver's license, died after he caused a
disturbance and county detention officers wrestled him into a
restraining chair, authorities have said. [more
