Inmate suffocated; state investigation continues

The inmate who died Sept. 25 at the Catawba County jail suffocated after a fractured rib punctured one of his lungs and filled it with blood, authorities said Tuesday.But N.C. State Bureau of Investigation agents, who are looking into 29-year-old Ricardo Garza's death, wouldn't say how the rib was broken or whether either of the two officers who restrained Garza would be charged with a crime. Garza, a Hickory resident in jail after a Sept. 20 arrest for driving while impaired and without a driver's license, died after he caused a disturbance and county detention officers wrestled him into a restraining chair, authorities have said.
