The bill, known as the Large Retailer Accountability Act, would require retailers with corporate sales of $1 billion or more and operating District stores of at least 75,000 square feet to pay their employees a “living wage” — no less than $12.50 an hour in combined wages and benefits. The proposal includes an exception for employers who collectively bargain with their workers. Existing employers would have four years to come into compliance.
The city’s minimum wage is $8.25 an hour. The bill would raise the annual earnings of a full-time employee making the lowest legal wage from about $17,000 to $26,000.

The Florida police chief that is actively investigating a confrontation between George Zimmerman, his wife and his father-in-law says someone is lying: either George Zimmerman or his lawyer.
Both the Lake Mary Florida Police Chief, Steve Bracknell, and the department’s spokesman Zach Hudson confirmed to ThinkProgress that George Zimmerman told officers at the scene that he did not have a gun on him during the incident. This directly contradicts what ZImmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara, told CNN:
O’MARA: He acted appropriately. He never took the weapon out. The only thing he really did, which is what he told the police, was on the outside of his shirt, he made sure the gun wasn’t moving anywhere and didn’t do anything because [Zimmerman's father-in-law] Mr. Dean was sort of coming at him, that can sort of be seen in the video.
COOPER: So he had the gun actually on his person not like, in the glove box of his car?
O’MARA: That’s correct.
Bracknell acknowledged the contradiction, telling ThinkProgress “Who is telling the truth? Good question.” He added that O’Mara was “on scene providing legal advice to hid [sic] client.” Bracknell appeared to suggest that O’Mara was well-informed of the facts of the case and had little reason to invent facts — like Zimmerman having a gun — that would be damaging to his client.
Zimmerman’s wife Shellie told a 911 operator that George Zimmerman “continually has his hand on his gun and he keeps saying step closer and he is just threatening all of us.” After consulting with her lawyers, she recanted her story.

From [HERE] Poverty consumes so much mental energy that people struggling to make ends meet often have little brainpower left for anything else, leaving them more susceptible to bad decisions that can perpetuate their situation, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science.
“Past research has often blamed [poverty] on the personal failings of the poor. They don’t work hard enough; they’re not focused enough,” said University of British Columbia professor JiayingZhao, who co-authored the study as a Princeton University graduate student. “What we’re arguing is it’s not about the individual. It’s about the situation.”
As part of the study, researchers conducted experiments on two groups of subjects: low- and middle-income shoppers in a mall in New Jersey, and sugar cane farmers in rural India.
In the mall experiment, shoppers underwent a battery of tests to measure IQ and impulse control. However, half the participants were first given a “teaser” question — what they would do if their car had broken down and needed $1,500 worth of repairs — designed to put a pressing financial concerns at the forefront of their thoughts.
In India, researchers tested the cognitive capacity and decision-making of farmers before the sugar cane harvest, when they were most strapped for money, and afterwards, when they had fewer financial woes.
The results showed that people wrestling with the mental strain of poverty suffered a drop of as much as 13 points in their IQ — roughly the same found in people subjected to a night with no sleep.
“Poverty is the equivalent of pulling an all-nighter,” said Harvard economist SandhilMullainathan, another of the study’s authors. “Picture yourself after an all-nighter. Being poor is like that every day.”
Mullainathan said previous research often has assumed that poor people are poor because they are somehow less capable than others, whether inherently or because of past trauma or other environmental factors in their lives. But, he said, what the latest study suggests is that the strain of poverty can tax the cognitive abilities of anyone experiencing it — and that those abilities return when the burden of poverty disappears.

Racist Suspect (white person) John Spooner is accused of murdering Darius Simmons, an unarmed Black 13 year old, in front of his mother in an unprovoked shooting in the front of her home on May 31, 2012 in Milwaukee. Even though Spooner confessed to the murder, the Milwaukee police searched the mother's home, detained her for hours and arrested her other son. While she was detained her son died at the hospital [MORE] and [MORE]. At his arraingment Spooner came to court laughing, giggling and motioning for coffee, showing no remorse." [MORE] and [MORE].
From [HERE] 77-year-old John Spooner's trial is set to finally begin after the Milwaukee County Courthouse was temporarily closed by a weekend electrical fire. Spooner is accused of killing his neighbor 13-year-old Darius Simmons in 2012.
According to the criminal complaint, Simmons was retrieving the garbage from the curb when Spooner walked up to him and confronted him. Spooner, who claims to be a victim of multiple burglaries, accused the teen of being the culprit of at least one of the burglaries.
Spooner asked Simmons for his belongings back, including two shotguns. Simmons denied having anything to do with Spooners’ stolen property. Simmons’ mother Patricia Larry (who was watching) told police that she also told Spooner that they had nothing to do with his stolen property. The criminal complaint says that’s when Spooner pulled out his gun and fired two shots at Simmons' chest, as his mother watched. The company’s hardball tactics come out of a well-worn playbook that involves successfully using Wal-Mart’s leverage in the form of jobs and low-priced goods to fend off legislation and regulation that could cut into its profits and set precedent in other potential markets. In the Wilson Building, elected officials have found their reliable liberal, pro-union political sentiments in conflict with their desire to bring amenities to underserved neighborhoods.

The necessary illusion of justice in criminal trials involving non-whites usually includes non-white lawyers, jurors, judges, courtroom clerks as part of the show. Not so with the Zimmerman trial - it is an old skool whitewash; complete with a white judge, white prosecutors, white defense attorneys and a mostly all white jury (5 out of 6 are white). But there are a few token folks propped up in the white media coverage of the so-called trial.

Five are white, and one is Hispanic. The racial and ethnic makeup of potential jurors is relevant because prosecutors have alleged that Zimmerman, a racist suspect, profiled Martin, a black teenager, in following the teen as Martin was walking back from a convenience store to the home of his father's fiance.
Zimmerman is accused in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin inside the black teen's gated community last year in Sanford, Fla. The 29-year-old claims he was defending himself when he shot and killed Martin during an altercation.

refuse to tell WHO is practicing racism; HOW racism is being practiced; and refuse to help the victims with the information they have

From [HERE] The offensive language used by U.S. Senator Jeff Flake's teenage son on the Internet has resulted in a public apology from both father and son. “I’m very disappointed in my teenage son’s words, and I sincerely apologize for the insensitivity. This language is unacceptable, anywhere. Needless to say, I’ve already spoken with him about this, he has apologized, and I apologize as well,” Senator Flake said in a statement to BuzzFeed.
Flake is a super patriotic white man or racist suspect, Republican (White Party) Congressman from Arizona. The Flakes are mormons. Before Tanner Flake locked his Twitter account, his public tweets regularly contained offensive slurs, according to Buzzfeed. On his Twitter account, Flake also posted screenshots of games revealing his username, "n1ggerkiller."
A source points out that Flake’s YouTube comments are also littered with offensive language. A "preliminary review" of the hundreds of comments shows he repeatedly called other users “nigger” and “faggot,” called Mexicans the “scum of the Earth,” and on several occasions bragged that his father is a member of Congress.
