Located in the Memphis neighborhood of Boxtown, Tennessee, xAI’s “Colossus supercomputer” data center has been mired in controversy ever since its inception, pumping noxious gasses into the air and drying out local faucets. For Musk, it’s the key piece of infrastructure behind AI ambitions — the facility keeping him in the AI race with other tech magnates like Sam Altman and Mark Zuckerberg.

For the predominantly black residents of Boxtown, however, Colossus is turning their neighborhood into a putrid nightmare.

Boxtown is a historically and predominantly African American neighborhood in South Memphis, Tennessee, founded by formerly enslaved people shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863

Speaking to The Times, 81-year-old Boxtown resident Willie Joe Stafford blamed the mucus he regularly hacks up is the result of Colossus’ pollution. “The people who live round here are blacks,” he said. “So they think they can do what they want.”

Another resident, Sarah Gladney, explained that xAI has changed the character of the neighborhood, which wasn’t exactly pretty before.

“Prior to xAI, we were dealing with more of a waste smell. Like poop. This is more like a chemical-type smell,” she explained. At 71, Gladney told the publication she hardly ever opens her windows for fresh air, and no longer goes on her daily walks.

“We have to put our lungs up in exchange for profit,” 66-year-old Boxtown resident Batsell Booker told The Times. His daughter, Booker said, is recovering from cancer — a disease Boxtown has no shortage of. [MORE]

From [HERE] Schools are less likely to offer Latino and Black students early algebra classes, effectively shutting these students off from advanced courses and higher-paying jobs, according to research released Tuesday.

Algebra has traditionally been offered to teens starting in ninth grade, but a growing body of research shows that students who take the class in eighth grade are more likely to succeed in high school math, pursue STEM majors in college and earn more money as adults.

Nationwide, 3 in 5 schools offer students the option to take early algebra, according to research from NWEA, a national testing group. Schools in rural areas, high-poverty schools and campuses with a large Black or Latino student body were less likely to offer the class.

“Algebra in eighth grade is not just another math class,” said Daniel Long, one of the report’s researchers. “This is closing off access to advanced math pathways for many students.”

Even if a school does offer algebra to eighth-graders, access is often determined by a child’s race or ethnicity, Long added. More than half of Asian eighth-graders took the course when their school offered it, compared with 22 percent of Latino students and 17 percent of Black students, data shows.

Those gaps, Long said, persisted even among top-achieving students. Among high-performing pupils, about 60 percent of Black students are placed into algebra in eighth grade, compared with 84 percent of Asian students and 68 percent of White and Latino students.

“Placement, not ability, seems to be the driver,” Long said. Researchers examined 162,000 children in 22 states.

Most schools use test scores, teacher recommendations and parent requests to determine who gets to take eighth-grade algebra. But those methods can be biased, said Allison Socol, vice president of P-12 policy, practice and research at EdTrust, a national education nonprofit that has also found disparities in who gets to take challenging classes.

“Because of implicit biases, racial biases, and mindsets about who is and who isn’t a math person, Black and Latino students and students from low-income backgrounds — even when they demonstrate that they are ready and they are very clear that they are eager for those courses — are still shut out,” Socol said. “Across the U.S., in every state, students of color and students from low-income backgrounds are often shut out of rigorous courses.”

Teachers tend to underestimate children of color, even when they perform similarly to White students, a New York University researcher found. Wealthier parents tend to advocate more than less affluent families, according to research from Rand. [MORE]

Two pregnant Black women nearly 1,000 miles apart were ready to do what many do every day: welcome new bundles of joy, and just before the start of the holiday season. Instead, the health of both women and their babies was put at risk after hospital staff did not immediately provide the needed care.

One woman was discharged and delivered her baby on the side of an Indiana highway, while the other nearly gave birth in a Texas hospital’s emergency waiting room. Both women survived, but are still reeling from ordeals that have drawn national attention — in part, because they were captured on video and shared on social media.

Each instance highlights the long-standing and rising disparities in health outcomes for Black women, who die at a rate nearly 3.5 times higher than white women around the time of childbirth, according to a 2023 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.

While maternal mortality rates for white, Hispanic and Asian women fell in 2023, according to the CDC report, the rate for Black women barely budged.

Now, the women’s families, health organizations and civil rights advocates are urging the medical profession to address systemic racism that they say perpetuates Black women’s experiences.

‘I felt dismissed’

Mercedes Wells’ water had already broken when a nurse at Indiana’s Franciscan Health Crown Point hospital checked on her in triage, a room typically designated for women in earlier trimesters of pregnancy.

Wells, already a mother of three, knew the baby could come at any minute. The nurse did not believe she was going into labor, Wells recalled.

“She still suggested that I be discharged and I begged, ‘No, I can’t be discharged. Please don’t discharge me because I am about to have this baby,’” Wells, 38, told The Associated Press from her Chicago area home in Dolton, Illinois.

“I began to wail because I was in so much pain, and my feelings were hurt because that was happening to me. So I let out a cry, you know? The nurses showed no compassion, none of them,” said Wells, whose experience was captured in a now-viral video of her crying in pain as nurses pushed her toward the exit.

But she was out of time. Wells felt the baby coming.

Her husband, Leon, loaded her into their car and sped away hoping to reach another hospital. Thereafter, in the early morning hours of Nov. 16, he pulled over on a Lake County highway and delivered their daughter.

Wells said the nurses she saw were all white, and all assured her that concerns were relayed to the attending physician.

“I felt dismissed. I felt ignored, disregarded as a whole,” she said. “I’m dealing with this pain, and they’re all watching me from the nurse’s station as if it’s normal to send someone out in that much pain.”

Franciscan Health Crown Point said in a statement that both the nurse and physician involved in Wells’ ordeal were fired and that the hospital has mandated cultural competency training for all labor and delivery staff. [MORE]

In the past two months, more than 80 people have been killed by U.S. air strikes on over 20 civilian boats in the waters off the Latin American country. The Trump administration has provided no evidence to back up claims that these killings were carried out against alleged drug traffickers. They are extrajudicial executions, or murder.

This week, Trump has designated the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as the head of a foreign terrorist organization, an alleged narcotics cartel that is supposedly flooding the U.S. with drugs. Again, no evidence is provided. Venezuela dismissed the allegations as a ridiculous lie whose ulterior motive is the illegal use of U.S. military force for regime change in Caracas.

The pretext of combating the illicit drug trade should be seen as transparent. The largest deployment of U.S. military force in the Caribbean since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis is in itself a demonstration that the real agenda is not about interdicting drugs.

Venezuela’s role in narcotics trafficking to the United States is not significant compared with other Latin American countries, according to the UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime. Colombia and Peru are more important as cocaine sources. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has denoted Mexico as the biggest source of illicit fentanyl, which is responsible for most American overdose deaths.

The bigger picture is, of course, the objective to get rid of a socialist government in Venezuela and for the U.S. to gain control of the country’s vast oil reserves, the largest known reserves on the planet. Allied to that major reason is the desire in Washington to stymie China’s legitimate growing strategic partnerships across Latin America. As Donald Ramotar, the former president of Guyana, and other observers pointed out in a recent roundtable discussion sponsored by the Schiller Institute, the United States is flexing its muscles in its presumed “backyard” to try to restore its failing global power.

This should be obvious, as it is criminal. The United Nations Charter explicitly outlaws every aspect of Trump’s conduct towards Venezuela. Article 2:3 mandates that all disputes must be settled through peaceful means. Article 2:4 prohibits the use or threat of military force.

Venezuelans, who should be reasonably angered about the ongoing random murder spree, appear to have had no reaction to the boat strikes in the many public gatherings since the strikes began. You would also assume that Venezuela authorities would use the boat murders against Tump/Bush to its moral advantage on the international stage. However, Freddy Ñáñez, the Venezuelan communications minister, stated that the footage of the attack was fake. [MORE] and Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela's Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace, characterized the strike as "fake news" "invented" by the US as a cover for regime change and President Maduro has ignored the strikes altogether making no mention of them in his various speeches.

THERE IS NO ARMED CONFLICT, SO “THE LAW OF ARMED CONFLICT” WOULD NOT APPLY. IF THEse KILLINGS actually occuRred they are simply MURDERS. Based on the fact that the US military killed persons from another country and the incidents happened outside of the US, international law applies.

The analysis is straightforward: WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WAS there an armed conflict between the United States and VENEZUELA? The answer is no. So it means that the international human rights law standard is applicable. According to said standard the use of lethal force against an individual must be “absolutely necessary.”

An international court would determine whether EACH individual(s) in the boat(s) posed a “concrete, specific, and imminent threat to life and physical safety,” and whether the United States MILITARY could have reasonably used nonlethal force to address that threat.

The memo states that the high number of deaths from drug use among American drug consumers constitutes an “armed attack” against the United States. Really? Where are the armaments? Are Latin American drug dealers entering the United States, kidnapping regular American citizens, physically holding them down, and then injecting drugs into their noses, mouths, or other parts of their bodies?

I don’t think so. There is certainly no evidence of that. All of the evidence is that American consumers of drugs are voluntarily buying and ingesting mind-altering substances knowing full well that this isn’t a risk-free endeavor.

Another part of the memo claims that the boats that are suspected of carrying drugs are generating revenue for groups that are supposedly in armed conflict with the United States.

Really? Where are the conflicts? I don’t see any Latin American cartels landing on American shores and killing American citizens. Indeed, I haven’t seen those boats firing at American Naval vessels or at American B-52s. All I’ve seen is massacres of defenseless private individuals in the face of overwhelming U.S. military power.

According to the Intercept: “One senior defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, blasted the opinion. ‘I don’t know what’s more insane – that the ‘President of Peace’ is starting an illegal war or that he’s giving a get out of jail free card to the U.S. military,’ said the official, referencing President Donald Trump’s self-proclaimed moniker. ‘Hopefully they realize there’s no immunity for war crimes. Nor is there a statute of limitations.’”

One of the other justifications on which Trump and the Pentagon are relying is their claim that these boat people are “terrorists.” Apparently that governmental accusation means that they are subject to being exterminated without arrest, indictment, prosecution, conviction, and sentence — that is, without any due process of law for what amounts to an accusation of a criminal-law violation, whether it is drug-war-related or terrorist-related.

For some time, Trump has been claiming that Venezuela immigrants have been “invading” the United States. I guess we should be thankful that the Office of Legal Counsel hasn’t yet opined that the U.S. is repelling an immigrant “invasion” of the United States by killing people in those boats.

One of the most fascinating and revealing aspects of these extra-judicial killings is when U.S. forces took custody of two targeted people who survived the attack on their vessel. What happened afterward reveals what a sham these drug-war killings are. U.S. officials released both men back to their home countries.

What? Yes, they took two supposed “narco-terrorists” into custody and then released them, which means that they are now free to engage in more “narco activity” and more “terrorism.” Does that make any sense whatsoever?

The real interesting question is: When they saw that those men had survived the military attack on their vessel, why didn’t U.S. military personnel simply fire missiles at them or just shoot them while they were bobbing in the water? The US State Department on Monday formally designated the Cartel de los Soles, or Cartel of the Suns, a group that doesn’t actually exist, as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization,” providing a pretext for a potential attack on Venezuela.

The term “Cartel of the Suns” was first used in the 1990s to describe two Venezuelan military generals with sun insignias on their uniforms who were involved in cocaine trafficking. According to a 60 Minutes report that aired in 1993, one of the generals was working with the CIA at the time.

Today, the term is used to describe a loose network of Venezuelan military and government officials allegedly involved in drug trafficking, but the Cartel of the Suns doesn’t actually exist as a structured organization.

According to InSight Crime, a think tank that receives grants from the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, recent US sanctions mischaracterized the Cartel of the Suns, which InSight described as “a system of corruption wherein military and political officials profit by working with drug traffickers.”

Despite the reality, the US is now calling the Cartel of the Suns a terrorist organization and claims that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is its leader, a push being led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has long sought regime change in Caracas. [MORE]

The ambassador of the Russian Federation to Venezuela, Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov, announced via his social media that flights between the Eurasian nation and Venezuela continue to operate.

“I am pleased to inform you of my return to Venezuela. Taking advantage of the recently inaugurated regular flight from St. Petersburg (the heroic city of Leningrad), I have returned to the homeland of Bolívar, Chávez, and Maduro,” the diplomat stated.

The ambassador highlighted that together with the Venezuelan delegation, the 19th meeting of the High-Level Intergovernmental Commission was held in Russia, in which important documents were signed aimed at strengthening and further developing the strategic partnership between both countries, in the name of peace and progress.

In the interview – which has already gained 38,000 views on YouTube – Professor Rogers describes the level of destruction in Gaza as “unparalleled in the post Second World War World era.” 

 He goes on: “If you look at the total tonnage of weapons dropped, mainly bombs but missiles and tens of thousands of artillery shells, you get a total of something like 70,000 tonnes of explosives. 

 “Back in the Cold War days, we used to say a kilotonne is equivalent to a thousand tonnes of TNT. We are now using explosives that are much more powerful than TNT. But if we do use that figure – 70 kilotonnes of weapons dropped across Gaza – Hiroshima was about 12 kilotonnes, so we are talking about the equivalent of six Hiroshimas... but because these bombs drop individually, they are spread much more, so you get an extraordinary level of devastation. It’s certainly more than Dresden, certainly more than the other 2,000 bomber raids in the Second World War. 

 “This is about as bad as it [gets] outside the Second World War. Very few people realise just how intense this has been, and how continual. The Trump administration has stationed more forces inside Syria, taking over two air bases there, while pushing for an Israeli-Syrian normalisation “security deal” and using American power in an attempt to disarm both Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Hashd al-Shaabi in Iraq.

Trump’s regime most recently bullied the UN’s Security Council into quickly accepting the most disgraceful resolution of the Palestine issue, authorising a regime change operation. He has stationed US boots on the ground, oversees daily Israeli war crimes that violate the Gaza ceasefire, and is attempting to follow through on his pledge from February to “own Gaza”.

Domestically, from day one, he pursued the implementation of ‘Project Esther’, a document published by the Heritage Foundation think-tank, that seeks to dismantle free speech about Israeli crimes in the United States. He also accelerated the worst crackdown on American academic freedom in US history.

Now he pivots to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a "terrorist organisation" at the behest of Israeli lobbying efforts, allowing for this designation to grant greater powers for a crackdown on pro-Palestinian non-profit groups, by claiming they are affiliated with a "terrorist organisation". Ever since October 7th, credible allegations have widely circulated that Zionist Occupation Forces are illegally harvesting the organs of slain Palestinians. In November 2023, the Euro-Med Monitor published a report documenting how Israeli soldiers confiscated dozens of corpses from major hospitals in Gaza, to the extent of digging up and raiding mass graves built in their grounds to accommodate the never-ending influx of slaughtered civilians. While some bodies were subsequently handed over to the Red Cross, many were and remain withheld.

Euro-Med Monitor records how many corpses exhibited clear indications of organ harvesting, including missing cochleas and corneas, as well as hearts, kidneys, and livers. Since then, the Zionist entity has released token numbers of murdered Palestinians at intermittent intervals to their surviving relatives. Frequently, the bodies are decomposed beyond recognition, making conducting professional autopsies - and identifying whether organs have been stolen - difficult if not impossible. Sometimes, the corpses are frozen solid, again greatly complicating medical examinations, and potentially obscuring organ theft.

The 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention mandates respect for the dignity of dead civilians, and explicitly prohibits the looting or mutilation of their bodies during wartime. However, the Zionist entity has not only failed to ratify the treaty, but expressly rejects its applicability to Gaza and the illegally-occupied West Bank. Was the COVID Plandemic Always a CIA Plot?

From [HERE] According to newly released emails, the United States Intelligence Community, led by the CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, held regular meetings with Dr. Ralph Baric, one of America’s leading coronavirus experts, since at least 2015. 

Senator Rand Paul’s office has worked for years to obtain the documents. 

Baric has been accused of engineering the Covid-19 virus in his lab at the University of North Carolina, but he has never had to testify about his role in the pandemic despite his well-documented collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology. 

The newly released emails reveal that the CIA hoped to discuss “Coronavirus evolution and possible natural human adaptation with Baric” and that Baric held quarterly meetings with members of the Intelligence Community. 

These emails are just the latest additions to the suspicious amalgamation of facts implicating the US Intelligence Community’s role in the origins of the pandemic, as discussed in The Covid Response at Five Years.

A very brief overview of the timeline suggests that the CIA and the Intelligence Community are implicated in the creation of the virus, a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and censorship to evade any public scrutiny for their role in the pandemic. 

• 2015: The Intelligence Community held quarterly meetings with Dr. Ralph Baric and discussed “possible human adaptation” to coronavirus evolution. 

• 2019-2020: The CIA had a spy working at the Wuhan Institute of Virology doing “both offensive and defensive work” with pathogens, according to Seymour Hersh. That asset reports in early 2020 that there was a laboratory accident that resulted in the infection of a researcher. 

• March 18, 2020: The Department of Homeland Security replaced Health and Human Services as the lead Federal Agency responding to Covid, as explained in depth in Debbie Lerman’s The Deep State Goes Viral. 

• Spring 2020: The CIA offered bribes to scientists to bury their findings refuting the “proximal origin” theory advanced by Dr. Anthony Fauci, according to a whistleblower. The House Oversight Committee explains: “According to the whistleblower, at the end of its review, six of the seven members of the Team believed the intelligence and science were sufficient to make a low confidence assessment that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.” Then, however, the “six members were given a significant monetary incentive to change their position.”

• 2020: Dr. Fauci began holding secret meetings at CIA headquarters “without a record of entry” in order to “influence its Covid-19 origins investigation,” according to a whistleblower. “He knew what was going on…He was covering his ass and he was trying to do it with the Intel community,” the whistleblower told Congress.”

• 2021: Scientists in the Department of Defense compiled significant evidence suggesting Covid emerged from a lab leak, but President Biden’s Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, banned them from presenting their evidence or participating in a discussion on the origins of the virus.

• 2021: CISA, an agency within the Department of Homeland Security, implemented a program known as “switchboarding,” where officials dictated to Big Tech platforms what content is permissible or prohibited speech. 

• 2022: The Department of Homeland Security announced it will establish a “Disinformation Governance Board.” The Ministry of Truth is only discontinued when the absurdity of its chief censor, Nina Jankowicz, receives sufficient blowback from the public. [MORE]

Defense Stocks Fall as Trump Pushes Ukraine Peace Deal

President Donald Trump said on Monday that the U.S. and Ukraine had made “big progress” in settling on a peace proposal to put to Russia, sending several defense stocks lower.

That, however, only trimmed the sector’s big year-to-date gains. Defense stocks can react to news, but their longer-term performance is typically a function of defense spending, which is currently expected to rise.

“Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine??? Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Monday.

Shares of France’s Thales, Germany’s Rheinmetall, and the U.K.’s BAE Systems fell 1.5%, 5%, and 3.6%, respectively, on Monday. Coming into the week, those three stocks were up an average of 87% year to date, boosted by expectations for rising European defense spending.

 Shares of drone maker AeroVironment, which has supplied its Switchblade loitering, guided bomb to the Ukrainian military, appeared to be unaffected by the peace talks. Shares rose 1.6%, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.6% and 0.4%, respectively. [MORE]

Led by US, Revenue of Major Weapons Makers Hit All-Time High in 2024

From [HERE] An annual report out Monday that tracks global arms sales shows that weapons makers in 2024 generated more revenue than at any time since the group behind the research began tracking the data over 35 years ago.

The annual report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shows that the top 100 weapons makers in the world—led by those in the United States—brought in a record-setting $679 billion over the course of the year, fueled mainly by the war in Ukraine, Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza, and spending on nuclear weaponry.

“Last year global arms revenues reached the highest level ever recorded by SIPRI as producers capitalized on high demand,” said Lorenzo Scarazzato, a researcher with the SIPRI Military Expenditure and Arms Production Programme, which has been tracking global arms sales since 1989.

“In 2024,” the report explains, “the growing demand for military equipment around the world, primarily linked to rising geopolitical tensions, accelerated the increase in total Top 100 arms revenues seen in 2023. More than three-quarters of companies in the Top 100 (77 companies) increased their arms revenues in 2024, with 42 reporting at least double-digit percentage growth.” [MORE]

Iran Foreign Ministry says the US has become the Biggest Threat to World Peace

From [HERE] Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Monday that the United States poses the greatest threat to world peace and security, employing a pattern of unilateral use of force and coercion.

In his weekly press conference, the spokesman was asked about Washington's hostile actions against several nations, including Venezuela, following its military deployment in the Caribbean.

"The reality is that the United States, with the behavior it has shown during this time, has become the greatest threat to international peace and security," he asserted.

He added that actions based on threats and the use of force by the United States can be witnessed in every corner of the world. "In the Western Hemisphere, threats against Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and even Brazil and Mexico are constantly repeated by U.S. officials," he noted.

Baqaei also emphasized that the closure or declaration of airspace closure by a country is an unprecedented action, being contrary to all international norms and regulations, as well as regulations related to aviation safety.

Furthermore, he referred to Washington's threats against African countries, "including the declaration that, for example, South Africa has no right to participate in the G20 summit, which constitute another example of this approach."

The spokesman recalled that the US has given unwavering support to the criminal actions committed by Israel in the region.

Power Shut Offs are Rising as Utility Companies Run by Elites Turn the Electricity Off on More Americans, as Unpaid Bills Pile Up

From [HERE] Soaring electricity prices are triggering a wave of power shutoffs nationwide, leaving more Americans in the dark as unpaid bills pile up. Although there is no national count of electricity shutoffs, data from select utilities in 11 states show that disconnections have risen in at least eight of them since last year, according to figures compiled by The Washington Post and the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA). In some areas, such as New York City, the surge has been dramatic — with residential shutoffs in August up fivefold from a year ago, utility filings show.

In Pennsylvania, where Pellew lives, power shutoffs have risen 21 percent this year, with more than 270,000 households losing electricity, according to state data through October. The average electricity bill in the state, meanwhile, has risen 13 percent from a year ago, as utilities upgrade electric grids to accommodate a burst of new data centers, according to an analysis of federal data by NEADA, which represents state directors of energy aid programs for low-income families.

Overall, Americans are paying 11 percent more for electricity than they were in January, though that number varies widely: Costs have risen 37 percent in Missouri but have fallen in three states by as much as 13 percent, NEADA found.

“With prices going up so rapidly, electricity is becoming unaffordable in many parts of the country,” said Mark Wolfe, an energy economist and executive director of NEADA. “And it isn’t just lower-income households anymore; it’s spilling into the middle class.” [MORE]
