Prop. 200 sent to Ninth Circuit Court

The controversial legislation that limits the access of illegal immigrants to public services has been in court since voters approved it on Nov. 2. In an emergency motion, the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) asked the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, Calif., on Jan. 4 to block portions of Prop. 200 while lawyers continue court proceedings Jan. 4. MALDEF asked for a decision within 21 days. On Dec. 22, a U.S. District Court Judge in Tucson lifted a restraining order on the ban, declaring it constitutional and allowing it to become law. [more]
