Census: Florida only behind New York in Black population

Florida is only behind New York in the number of black residents among the 50 states, after about 292,000 more blacks moved to the Sunshine State from 2000 to 2003, according to Census figures released Thursday. The figures also showed Broward County attracted more blacks from 2000 to July 2003 than any other county in the nation, with nearly 70,000 blacks moving to Broward over that time. Florida had the fourth-highest black population in 2000. But the state then moved past California and Texas to reach nearly 2.8 million black residents in July 2003. New York had 3.6 million. Many of the 292,100 blacks who moved to Florida over that period are from the Caribbean or are of Caribbean descent. The decade-old trend of African Americans returning to the South has now extended to Florida and also contributed to the black population boost, experts said. [more ]
