The City of Monroe and the police chief have been slapped with a lawsuit in connection with the August 22nd shooting death of William Henderson. The suit was filed by Monica Bruce, Henderson's ex-wife. Mayor Jamie Mayo, Chief Ron Schleuter, the City of Monroe, and ten police officers are named as defendants in a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of Henderson's minor children. The civil suit contends that Henderson was unarmed and did not pose any threat to the officers and was walking away from them at the time of the shooting. According to the suit, police shot Henderson 17 times, though they knew of his history of mental illness and dealt with him previously in a nonviolent way. State police have turned over to the D-A's office a report on their investigation into the shooting. [more]
