Suit demands Detroit Mayor, Aide repay more than $9 million

Detroit attorney Corbett Edge O'Meara filed a lawsuit today against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty in Wayne County Circuit Court, seeking to recover more than $9 million O'Meara said they fraudulent spent to settle a police whistleblower lawsuit to conceal text messages showing they had an extramarital affair.

O'Meara also filed a motion to freeze all of Kilpatrick's assets, including the Detroit Justice Fund, which was created to raise money for Kilpatrick's criminal defense. He lists himself as the plaintiff in the suit, on behalf of all Detroit taxpayers.

"Kilpatrick and Beatty defrauded the city when they didn't reveal that the money was being paid for their personal benefit," O'Meara said in a statement today. A hearing on his motion to freeze the fund's assets is set for April 18 before Judge Wendy Baxter. [MORE]
