Mfume Waiting to See If Sarbanes Wants Another Term in U.S. Senate

Former NAACP  President Kweisi Mfume spoke about his potential political future today. He says he's waiting to see if Maryland Senator Paul Sarbanes seeks another term. Mfume made the comments to W-M-A-R-TV after a church service in Baltimore. "I'm waiting to see what Senator Sarbanes decides to do," Mfume told the station. "That's totally his decision. He's a dear friend. I've known him and supported him for the last 30 years or so, so, you know, there's time. We'll wait and see what happens."  Sarbanes, 72, was first elected to the Senate in 1976.  Mfume was a congressman before he left the House in 1995 after five terms to become president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.  Mfume said he decided to step down in November from the NAACP position to take a break and spend more time with his children.  When asked Sunday if he would consider running as Maryland's lieutenant governor, the station quoted Mfume as saying: "If I'm looking at the governor's office, I'm not looking to be lieutenant governor."  [more]
